Prime Minister Raja Parvaiz Ashraf Friday urged the countrymen to forge unity and make the country a safer place to live by defeating a specific mindset which is giving bad name to Islam and Pakistan. He was addressing at the launching ceremony of the report titled 'Reconciliation‚ Reforms and Revival: Four Years of Democratic Government' - based on the past four-year performance of the PPP-led coalition government. The document was released by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The 378-page report tells at length about the PPP government's performance over the past four years, covering reformation of politics, constitutional reforms, fiscal reforms, electoral reforms, gender reforms, indigenous response to terrorism and other issues.

The Prime Minister praised the government and its coalition partners for taking the challenging task after 2008 general elections, saying that it was a major accomplishment of the PPP to accept the challenge at a time when terrorists were knocking at the doors of the Federal Capital and it is about to complete its term successfully.

He said that formation of government with less numbers in the National Assembly after 2008 elections‚ forging of consensus on important issues and successful completion of its mandated term are the major achievements of the PPP. He also expressed confidence that the people would make a better choice in the next general elections on the basis of performance of the PPP government.

The Prime Minister came up with his own assessment of understanding the country's economy, saying people should understand that economy of the country has improved if people's life style is better than their fathers and forefathers. He said that improvement in the lives of the people after assumption of power by the party was reflective of the success of the government.

To the critics flaying President Zardari for holding dual offices, he said that the President restored powers of parliament usurped by a dictator, adding that it was a politician sitting in the presidency who voluntarily surrendered his powers. Recalling the country's situation before taking over the government, he said that the menace of terrorism had assumed serious dimensions with apprehensions being expressed that terrorists could cross over Margalla entering Islamabad anytime. Similarly, the country was importing 2.6 million tones of wheat, now it is not only surplus but a wheat exporting country, he pointed out.

Highlighting other measures undertaken by the government, he said that it was for the first time that salaries of government employees had gone up by 150 percent, adding that there had been an increase in pensions too. He said that people were politically much aware and hoped that they would make a better choice on the basis of performance of the PPP government.

The Prime Minister also delicately criticised a section of the media, saying that the PPP government had completed its tenure despite frequent 'deadlines' given for its fall with a view to creating uncertainty. Urging media persons not to present mere opinions as facts, he said that the media should not compromise on the accuracy of news reports. Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira while addressing on the occasion said that the PPP-led coalition government has implemented the policy of reconciliation as envisioned by Benazir Bhutto.

He claimed that the PPP government during its four and a half year tenure, made 89 percent implementation on Charter of Democracy (CoD) signed by PPP's late chairperson Benazir Bhutto and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif in their exile during the Musharraf regime.

Kaira said the PPP has always assumed power at a critical stage of the country's history, adding that it formed the government after the 1971 tragedy and again in 1988 when Pakistan was bleeding due to terrorism.

He said that the PPP introduced a new system of government by accommodating point of view of opposition during the process of legislation. Through devolution process‚ he said that power and resources have been transferred to the federating units after passage of the 18th Amendment and now there was no mistrust between the federal government and provinces. He said the federal government had so far given Rs 1,000 billion to provinces under the 7th National Finance Commission (NFC) Award.

Enumerating other achievements, he said that it was for the first time that the government brought reforms in the 100-year-old laws under Fata reforms to bring tribesmen in the mainstream national politics.
